Free support when you start a new medicine
Starting a new medicine can raise questions — how to take it, what side effects to expect, whether it’s working. The NHS New Medicine Service gives you free, private one-to-one support so you can use it with confidence.

What is the New Medicine Service?
The New Medicine Service (NMS) is a free NHS service for people who have just been prescribed a medicine for certain long-term conditions. Research shows that many people stop taking a new medicine, or take it incorrectly, within the first few weeks — often because of an unanswered question or an early side effect. NMS catches those problems early.
Conditions it covers
- Asthma and COPD (breathing conditions)
- Type 2 diabetes
- High blood pressure
- Conditions treated with blood-thinning or anticoagulant medicines
- Heart failure, acute coronary syndrome, and others
How it works
- When you collect a qualifying new medicine, we’ll offer to sign you up — it’s free and takes a minute.
- A week or two later, we have a short private chat about how you’re getting on.
- We answer your questions, check for side effects, and make sure you’re taking it correctly.
- A follow-up a few weeks after that confirms everything is on track.
Why it helps
Getting a new medicine right from the start means it’s more likely to work and less likely to cause problems. It’s a chance to ask the small questions that are easy to forget at the GP — with no rush and complete privacy.
- A rash, swelling, or difficulty breathing after a new medicine — call 999 if severe
- Side effects that worry you or stop you taking the medicine
- Any doubt about your dose or how to take it
If in doubt, call 111 or go to your nearest A&E. Always call 999 in an emergency.
