Free NHS blood pressure check in Southport
High blood pressure rarely has symptoms — the only way to know is to have it measured. We offer free NHS blood pressure checks for adults aged 40 and over. It takes a few minutes and could protect your heart.
How would you like to be seen?
Walk in any time we’re open, or book ahead so there’s no waiting when you arrive.
Why have your blood pressure checked?
High blood pressure (hypertension) is one of the biggest causes of heart attacks and strokes — yet it usually causes no symptoms at all. Around one in four adults in the UK has it, and many don’t know. A simple check is the only way to find out, and if your reading is high we can point you to the right next step.
Who is it for?
The free NHS check is for adults aged 40 and over who have not been diagnosed with high blood pressure. If you’re under 40 but worried — for example, if high blood pressure runs in your family — come in anyway and we’ll advise you.
What happens at your appointment
- We’ll take your reading using a clinically validated monitor — it’s painless and takes a couple of minutes.
- For sensitive or borderline readings, we use our private consultation room.
- We explain what your numbers mean in plain English.
- If your reading is high, we may offer a 24-hour home monitoring kit (ABPM) or refer you to your GP.
- You’ll get clear advice on diet, exercise, and when to come back.
What the numbers mean
- Below 120/80 — ideal blood pressure.
- 120/80 to 140/90 — slightly raised; worth keeping an eye on with lifestyle changes.
- Above 140/90 — high; we’ll usually recommend further monitoring or a GP review.
- A very high reading (above 180/120) with a headache, chest pain, breathlessness, or vision problems
- Chest pain spreading to your arm, neck, or jaw — call 999
- Sudden weakness, slurred speech, or face drooping — call 999 (signs of stroke)
If in doubt, call 111 or go to your nearest A&E. Always call 999 in an emergency.
