When might it be considered?
For most people, hay fever is well controlled with antihistamine tablets, steroid nasal sprays, and eye drops — and we’ll always make sure you’ve tried the right combination first. A hay fever injection (a steroid injection) is only considered for severe, disabling symptoms that haven’t responded to standard treatment, and only when our prescriber judges it appropriate for you.
An honest word first
Steroid injections for hay fever are not a first-line treatment and are not suitable for everyone. They carry different risks to tablets and sprays, so they are only offered after a careful, individual assessment — and sometimes the answer will be that they’re not right for you. We’d rather be straight with you than sell you something you don’t need.

- A non-drowsy antihistamine taken regularly through the season
- A steroid nasal spray, used correctly and started early
- Antihistamine eye drops for itchy, streaming eyes
- Simple measures like wraparound sunglasses and tracking the pollen count

- A check of your health history and any other medicines.
- An honest discussion of the benefits, risks, and alternatives.
- Treatment only if it’s clinically suitable for you.
